Payment of Government rent

**************************

The Lands Department has issued demand notes for Government rent in excess of $100 per annum for the half year ending December 25, 2002 in respect of properties subject to the Government Leases Ordinance (Chapter 40).

A spokesman for the Department said today (December 6), "To avoid the possible inconvenience of queuing, members of the public are urged to settle Government rent through various electronic means such as Autopay, Bank Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), Payment by Phone Service (PPS), bill payment services provided by banks and PPS on the internet (Treasury's website: http://www.info.gov.hk/tsy) or at any 'ESD Kiosks'."

"Payment may also be made by crossed cheque to P.O. Box No.28000, Gloucester Road Post Office, Hong Kong, or in person at any post offices except mobile post offices," he added.

Information on the locations of post offices and their opening hours are available at the Hongkong Post's enquiry hotline on 2921 2222 or its website: http://www.hongkongpost.com.

"Government rent payers who have not received their demand notes should inquire at the Government Rent and Premium Enquiries of the Lands Department at 1/F, North Point Government Offices, 333 Java Road, North Point, Hong Kong or telephone 2231 3033," the spokesman said.

"Purchasers of properties are strongly advised to instruct their solicitors to ensure that at the time of purchase the Government rent has been paid to date."

"For outstanding accounts of Government rent, enquiries can be made through the 'Government Rent and Premium Enquiries Hotline' on 2231 3033 by pressing 3, 3, 1."

He added that if a written confirmation of accounts position is needed, a fee of $86 is payable for each enquiry per property.
