Two works contracts for Route 9 signed

***************************************

The Highways Department (HyD) today (November 1) signed two contracts - Advance Works and Reprovisioning of Waterworks for Route 9 between Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin.

The first contract was awarded to Paul Y Construction Co. Ltd. at a contract sum of $86.8 million while the second one to U-Tech Engineering Co. Ltd. at $22.1 million.

Representing the Government in the contract signing ceremonies at Ho Man Tin Government Offices was the Acting Project Manager of HyD's Major Works Project Management Office, Mr Eddy Roblin.

The Advance Works mainly comprise advance site formation at the southern portal and the ventilation building sites of the Eagle's Nest Tunnel, including slopeworks, a bored pile retaining wall, a box culvert and watermain diversion.

Works will commence in November 2002 for 15 months.

The Reprovisioning of Waterworks mainly comprise the reprovisioning of a chlorination house allowing in-door unloading of chlorine cylinders of 50 kg; the construction of a new pump room; the installation of associated electrical and mechanical equipment as well as building services facilities; associated geotechnical works; and laying of cables and pipeworks.

Works would commence in November 2002 and will take about 12 months to complete.

Maunsell-Hyder Joint Venture will supervise the two works projects for HyD.

Route 9 is a trunk road linking Lantau and Sha Tin via Tsing Yi and West Kowloon. The main components include the North Lantau Highway and the Lantau Link completed in 1997; Route 9 between Tsing Yi and Cheung Sha Wan; and another section of the Route between Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin.

After the completion of the two sections, Route 9 will provide a direct link between the airport at Chek Lap Kok to North East New Territories. It will also connect the Lantau Link to the West Kowloon Highway at Cheung Sha Wan and provide direct accesses to the future Container Terminal No. 9

(CT9) and existing container terminals without going through the Tsing Yi local road network.
