Computer Forensics Laboratory helps detect computer crime

*********************************************************

The Computer Forensics Laboratory can further enhance Police capability in handling the ever-increasing complexity of computer crimes.

The remark was given by Chief Superintendent of Commercial Crime Bureau, Mr Wong Fook-chuen during a press visit to the laboratory this afternoon (September 10).

"The cases which required computer forensics have increased from 91 in 2000 to 159 in 2001, representing a rise of 75 per cent.

"Also, the volume of information that underwent the examination also rose from 1,100 gigabytes in 2000 to 4,800 gigabytes last year." Mr Wong said.

Situated on the 14th floor at the Arsenal House West Wing and with an area of 1,200 square metres, the laboratory, which was officially opened last Friday (September 6), could manage "independent" and "network" computer systems.

"We have invested $4 million into the laboratory, including $2 million for construction work and $2 million for equipment.

"Though it is not a large-scale laboratory, it has already reached the international standard.

Mr Wong noted that the Police would spend a further $2 million in purchasing new facilities within the year.

"The Police will continue to raise the competence in order to cope with this information-led era, and endeavour to provide the best quality of service.
