CE meets British Foreign Secretary

**********************************

The Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, met the visiting British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Mr Jack Straw, at his office today (July 18).

Mr Tung briefed him on the successful implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" concept since Hong Kong's reunification, and the recent introduction of the new accountability system.

Mr Tung noted that the biggest challenge of his second term was mainly economic. "Hong Kong is going through a major economic restructuring brought about by rapid globalisation, the advent of information technology and the development of the Mainland economy. We have to reposition ourselves as the world city of Asia to harness our competitive advantages and unique qualities," he said.

He also briefed Mr Straw on the government's commitment to investment in education and the maintenance of the rule of law, the transparency of the Government and a level playing field in Hong Kong.

Mr Straw is visiting Hong Kong for one day after his trip to Beijing and Tokyo.
