Voluntary recall of speaker power adaptors

******************************************

The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) today (June 5) urged consumers, for safety reasons, to stop using immediately the adaptors of the external amplified speaker sets that are supplied with Hewlett-Packard (HP) desktop computers.

The appeal was made after EMSD noticed an overseas recall announcement regarding the speaker power adaptors in question.

According to the supplier, Philips Electronics, the adaptors were supplied with HP's P1534-60002 external amplified speaker sets between October 2000 and April this year.

It was revealed that the T-junction plug of the adaptor's power cord was not grounded, posing a potential shock hazard to the users. The model of these adaptors, marked with "AC ADAPTOR", is HKA-12100ECD-230.

Consumers are advised to return these adaptors to the supplier as soon as practicable. The supplier will provide a new adaptor for replacement. Before unplugging the adaptor, the consumers are advised to switch off all power to their personal computer system and other peripherals that may be linked to their systems.

Details of the recall can be obtained by calling the supplier's toll-free hotline at 800-964-265, or browse Philips website at www.adapterrecall.com or HP website at www.hp.com.
