Speech by Director of Administration at "Building a Sustainable City" exhibition

******************************************************************

Following is the speech by the Director of Administration, Mr Andrew Wong, at the opening ceremony for "Building a Sustainable City" roving exhibition at Pacific Place in Admiralty today (April 22).

Ladies and gentlemen,

First of all, welcome to this event, and to the exhibition. By mounting this exhibition, which will also be held in other major shopping malls in the coming weeks, we hope to introduce to a large cross-section of the public what is behind the rather new or even high-sounding concept of sustainable development.

We are lucky to have several co-organisers to help us in this initiative, namely the Business Environment Council, Friends of the Earth, the Hong Kong Council of Social Services and Integer. With the involvement of these organisations, we can show the importance of involving different sectors of the community in pursuing sustainable development.

Sustainable development aims to achieve three main goals -

* First, a better quality of life for ourselves, in terms of social and economic progress, as well as a more pleasant environment;

* Second, provision of a better quality of life for our future generations; and

* Third, maintenance of a balance between economic development, protection of the natural environment and a fair and progressive society.

We can only achieve these goals if we all take part in making Hong Kong sustainable. And that is also the key message that I hope we can convey through this exhibition.

I therefore encourage you to enjoy the exhibition, and at the same time to think about how you can also contribute to building a sustainable city.
