Four Senior Counsel Appointed

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary :

The Honourable Chief Justice Andrew Kwok-nang LI, is pleased to announce today (March 26, 2002) the appointment of Mr Aarif Tyebjee BARMA, Mr LUK Yee Shun, Arthur, Mr WONG Yan Lung and Mr JAT Sew Tong as Senior Counsel of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The appointments are made by the Chief Justice under section 31A of the Legal Practitioners Ordinance.

Their appointments will take effect from the date of the Instrument of Appointment which will be executed on May 11, 2002 when the ceremonial proceedings will be held at 10:00 am in Court No. 1 of the High Court.

The biographical notes of the four newly appointed Senior Counsel are as follows :

Mr Aarif Tyebjee BARMA

Mr Aarif Tyebjee BARMA, aged 43, was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1983. His practice is in the civil field, including the areas of commercial law, company law and general civil matters. Mr BARMA is a member of the Board of Review (Inland Revenue Ordinance).

Mr LUK Yee Shun, Arthur

Mr LUK Yee Shun, Arthur, aged 50, was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 1985. Mr LUK joined the then Attorney General's Chamber in 1985 and has been specialising in criminal law. He is now the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions in the Department of Justice.

Mr WONG Yan Lung

Mr WONG Yan Lung, aged 38, was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 1987. His practice is mainly concerned with property law, constitutional and administrative law and general civil matters. Mr WONG was a member of the Bar Council between 1996 and 2002 and is a Chairman of the Appeal Tribunal Panel (Buildings).

Mr JAT Sew Tong

Mr JAT Sew Tong, aged 36, was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 1989. His practice is mainly in the areas of commercial law, company law, defamation and general civil matters. Mr JAT is currently the Honorary Secretary and Treasurer of the Hong Kong Bar Association.
