Transcript of Chief Executive

*****************************

The following is the transcript (English portion)of the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, on the question of right of abode during a media session today (January 10):

Mr Tung: The question of right of abode has affected our community for several years already. Today, the Court of Final Appeal has made a clear decision affecting several thousand cases. In Hong Kong, we respect the rule of law. I hope that all those affected will accept the court's decision.

In order to give time to the persons affected to make arrangements to return to the Mainland, and of course at the same time to spend the Chinese New Year in Hong Kong, following discussions, the Mainland Authorities have agreed to allow a "grace period". Between now and end of March, persons affected can return to the Mainland and the Authorities will not penalise them for entering Hong Kong illegally or for overstaying.

In the long run, after returning to the Mainland, I hope that persons who are eligible will apply according to the established procedures to rejoin their families here in Hong Kong.

(Please also refer to the Chinese portion.)
