Speech by Secretary for Health and Welfare

******************************************

Following is a speech by the Secretary for Health and Welfare, Dr E K Yeoh, at the Opening Ceremony of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs) Kwong Wah Hospital - The Chinese University of Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Clinical Research and Services Centre today (November 28):

Mr Chow, Prof Huang, Mr Tang, Ladies and Gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to be here today to officiate at the opening ceremony of the TWGHs Kwong Wah Hospital - The Chinese University of Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Clinical Research and Services Centre.

Chinese medicine has been widely used in the community and has made significant contribution to the prevention of disease, health maintenance and treatment of illnesses. The Tung Wah Group of Hospitals is a pioneer in the provision of Chinese medicine service in Hong Kong, providing out-patient service to the public for over 130 years. The Centre which opens today marks the beginning of a new development. Apart from providing specialist out-patient and day care services, the Centre will, in collaboration with local, Mainland and overseas research and academic institutions, conduct research for the development of evidence-based Chinese medicine.

To facilitate the development of standards of practice of Chinese medicines and models of interface between western and Chinese medicines, good clinical research is needed to provide evidence for future practice. The opening of the Centre is certainly a most welcome step in achieving this objective.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Hong Kong Jockey Club for its generous donation. I would also like to thank the TWGHs Board of Directors for their unfailing support for the development of Chinese medicine.

Thank you.
