Speech by Postmaster General

***************************

Good morning Dr. Tse, distinguished guests and friends from the media.

Thank you for joining us today at the issuing ceremony of the "Hong Kong Herbs" Special Stamp Issue. I would like to extend our special thanks to Dr. Daniel Tse, Chairman of Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong for officiating at today's ceremony.

After millennia of application and practice, herbs have become an integral part of Chinese heritage. Today as the value of Chinese medicine becomes more intelligible to the western world, the study of Chinese herbs has never been as keen among the academics. Despite that western medicine prevails in Hong Kong, the application of Chinese herbs never actually wanes in this cosmopolitan city. People now turn to Nature for more natural medicines in search of simplicity. The use of Chinese herbs, therefore, is experiencing a quasi-renaissance. In parallel with this development, our government is making strenuous effort to create an international centre for Chinese medicine and medical practitioners in Hong Kong. As the regulatory framework for Chinese medicine is now in place, the confidence in using Chinese herbs will be boosted among members of the public.

The four common species of Chinese herbs in Hong Kong - Centella asiatica, Lobelia chinensis, Gardenia iasminoides and Scutellaria indica are depicted in this set of special stamps issued today. We trust that it will attract those who are interested in herbs and philatelists alike.

Thank you.
