Speech by Postmaster General

********************************

Following is the speech by Postmaster General, Mr Luk Ping-chuen, on Hongkong Post being the first department joining the trial of electric government vehicle today (April 9):

Mr Hui, Mr Lo, Miss Lau, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

It's our pleasure to be the first to join the trial for electric government vehicle. As a matter of fact, Hongkong Post has always been committed to the promotion of environmental protection. Issuing postage stamps to enhance public awareness, recycling of toner cartridges and arranging staff training courses on environmental driving are just part of our endeavours.

In response to the concern on pollution caused by vehicle emission expressed in the Policy Address made by the Chief Executive last year, Government Land Transport Agency (GLTA) explores different suggestions to promote environmental protection in the government fleet. For instance, the introduction of diesel fuel with ultra low sulphur content, trial of catalyst and trial of electric vehicles. Hongkong Post responds with great enthusiasm and joins the trial of electric vehicle. Upon conclusion of the trial, we will further discuss with GLTA to formulate long-term strategies for actual implementation.

I would like to take this opportunity to call for your support to improve the quality of air in Hong Kong. With our concerted efforts, I am sure we can have a "Clean Air for You and Me".

Thank you.
