Symposium on digital broadcasting and convergence

The Broadcasting Authority and the Telecommunications Authority will hold a one-day symposium on digital broadcasting and convergence at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre tomorrow (February 15).

The symposium comprises four sessions, covering such areas as Digital Broadcasting, Convergence, Content Creation and Regulation in a Digital Environment and Social Impact, and Competition.

Secretary for Information Technology and Broadcasting, Mrs Carrie Yau, will speak on the policy proposals on digital broadcasting at the first session.

Sixteen speakers from local and overseas regulatory authorities as well as professionals from the local broadcasting and telecommunications industry, the academia and financial sector will take part in the symposium.

Overseas guest speakers include Professor David Flint, Chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Authority; Mr David Colville, Chairman of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission; Mr Robin Foster, Director of Strategy, Economics and Finance of the Independent Television Commission, UK; and Ms Jacquelynn Ruff, Associate Chief of the Telecommunications Division of the Federal Communications Commission, USA.

Local speakers include Mr Norman Leung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Broadcasting Authority; Mr Anthony S K Wong, Director-General of the Telecommunications; Mr Simon Twiston Davies of Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia; Ms Deborah Mei of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter; Dr John Ure of University of Hong Kong; Mr Cheong Shin Keong of Television Broadcasts Limited; Mr Stephen Ng of i-Cable Communications Limited; Professor Joseph Man Chan of Chinese University of Hong Kong; Mr H Y Kwong of Asia Television Limited; Ms Vivian Lau of SmarTone Telecommunications Holdings Limited; and Mrs Pamela Chan Wong Shui, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council.
