Speech by Postmaster General

****************************

The following is a speech by Mr P C Luk, Postmaster General and President of HONG KONG 2001 Organizing Committee at the Joint Ceremony with Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department held today (February 2):

Mrs Wei, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to the second day of the HK 2001 Stamp Exhibition. The total number of visitors recorded on the first day was about 40 000, an encouraging figure which is comparable to that of the last Exhibition. I reckon that one reason for the success of the Exhibition is our adoption of "Nature" as the theme of the Exhibition. In this regard, I would like to thank Mrs Wei and her colleagues of the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for rendering great assistance to us. They generously lent us photos on plants, animals and landscapes for inclusion into the HK 2001 Stamp Sheetlet series, meticulously vetted the descriptions on Nature which appeared on our Exhibition Bulletins and First Day Covers, and set up their own booth here to promote Nature preservation and environmental protection.

The promotion of philately as a world-wide hobby and the promotion of Nature preservation and environmental protection have much in common. They are both worthwhile causes. They are also challenging initiatives targetted at people from all walks of life and of all ages. I am sure there is much synergy to be gained in our joint efforts and I hope all visitors to the Exhibition find our stamps and displays on Nature interesting and enjoyable.

Thank you!
