The following is a speech by the acting Secretary for Economic Services, Ms Maria Kwan, at the opening ceremony of the "2001 Cathay Pacific Chinese New Year Parade" today (January 24):
Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, I would like to wish everyone, locals and visitors alike, a very happy, healthy and prosperous Year of the Snake.
Chinese New Year is traditionally the most important festival in our calendar. It is also the best time for visitors to experience the unique mix of the oriental and western cultures in Hong Kong. This year's parade with local, Mainland and overseas participants bears witness to this.
I would like to thank the Hong Kong Tourist Association, sponsors and participants for bringing to us such a wonderful event.
Kung Hei Fat Choy, and may all of you have your wishes fulfilled this year.
