Speech by SCI (English only)

*************

Following is a speech by the Secretary for Commerce and Industry, Mr CHAU Tak Hay, at the 2000 Hong Kong Eco-Business Awards Presentation Ceremony today (January 16):

Mr Wong, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Speaking to his constituents almost 150 years ago, the renowned British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli proclaimed that "there can be no economy where there is no efficiency". While Disraeli's statement is as valid today as it was in the nineteenth century, the pursuit of efficiency is now taking an entirely different route.

For one thing, we are no longer living in the age of Disraeli where efficiency often meant the exploitation of resources, natural or otherwise. We have come a long way indeed, and our community is now attaching increasing importance to the conservation of our natural environment. This includes the business sector, which has come to realise that the adoption of sound environmental practices is a rewarding investment rather than an undue burden.

Green management practices contribute towards business efficiency in the form of reduced operating costs, an improved working environment and enhanced customer relations. These green dividends add value to goods and services; and ultimately count towards enhancing the competitiveness of our enterprises. I am glad to see that more and more companies are embracing the concept of environmental protection in their business practices. Their efforts deserve our applause.

Since its launch in 1999, the Hong Kong Eco-Business Awards have provided a platform to showcase private sector efforts in environmental protection. Through the joint efforts of the organisers, the Awards have also provided an effective means to educate the private sector about the importance of environmental management and to promote the principles of green practices among Hong Kong companies. I would like to congratulate the Environmental Campaign Committee, the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce and the Hong Kong Productivity Council for organising this meaningful event.

Finally, I would like to extend my congratulations to all the award recipients. You have set a good example as the green leaders of the business community. I hope that you will keep up your good work and continue to help build a better and greener Hong Kong.

Thank you.
