The Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, made the following statement today (November 12, 2000):
"The Olympic Council of Asia has chosen Doha as the city for hosting the 2006 Asian Games. On behalf of Hong Kong, I extend to Doha our warm congratulations.
"This is the first time that Hong Kong has applied for the right to host such a major sports event. Through the bidding process, we have gained much valuable experience. Within one year, through our collective effort, Hong Kong has been able to put together a comprehensive bid document. This fully reflects Hong Kong's organisational ability and efficiency.
"All those involved in putting forth Hong Kong's bid have applied themselves fully and have put in their best efforts. We will naturally feel disappointed at this moment. But, in fact, through the bidding process, we have obtained a lot of precious experience.
"The bid for the Asian Games has definitely aroused the importance which the community places on sports and has also enabled us to evaluate comprehensively current sports facilities. Looking ahead, the Government is determined and committed to working together with the sports community to promote sports development in Hong Kong over the long term.
"The Asian Games Bid Committee, the Hong Kong Sports Federation and Olympic Committee, the sports community, business community and many others have contributed to the preparations for the bid. On behalf of the HKSAR Government, I would like to extend to all those concerned our deepest appreciation."
