The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) today (August 31) reminded the public that a new house rule would be in force as from tomorrow (September 1) to restrict the use of public swimming pools by children under 12 years old unless accompanied by adults.
An LCSD spokesman said; "Introduced with reference to an existing licensing condition required for private swimming pools, the new house rule aims at enhancing safety at public swimming pools, in particular for those under 12 years of age."
Notices to this effect will be prominently displayed at the entrance and the pool deck areas of all public swimming pools, supplemented by broadcasts at regular intervals.
He said: "These enhanced measures will be strictly implemented by pool staff in all public swimming pools. In case of doubt, children will be requested to produce proof of their age before admission."
LCSD had always been advocating that children should be accompanied by and under the care of adults when using LCSD swimming pools.
"Through a concerted effort of all concerned, safety for children in the public swimming pool can be further enhanced," the spokesman said.
To ensure their safety, swimmers irrespective of age are advised to follow the following safety rules: -
* Do not swim immediately after a meal * Do not rely on swimming aids * Warm up before you swim * Learn to swim and know your swimming ability * Cry for help when in difficulties
