LCSD lifeguards presented with letters of appreciation

*******************************************************

Seven outstanding lifeguards from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) were commended for their bravery and devotion to duty in two drowning cases late last month.

They were Tse Sun-fat and Leung Sai-cheung from the Butterfly Beach in Tuen Mun; as well as Nip Chi-way, Yau Tak-wai, Chan Chung-man, Ng She-chung and Tsang Chi-fai from the Shing Mun Valley Swimming Pool Complex in Tsuen Wan.

The first case occurred on June 28 after 6 pm. Two off-duty lifeguards at Butterfly Beach, Tse Sun-fat and Leung Sai-cheung, heard cries for help and found a seven-year-old boy lying unconsciously on the beach shore without any signs of breath. After applying artificial respiration promptly, they had successfully rescued the boy who later resumed breathing and pulse.

In the second case, an on-duty lifeguard Tsang Chi-fai found a 53-year-old male swimmer drowned and sinking into the water in Shing Mun Valley Swimming Pool Complex on June 20. He immediately rang the alarm bell and jumped into the water to pull him to the poolside with the assistance of four other lifeguards Nip Chi-way, Yau Tak-wai, Chan Chung-man and Ng She-chung. The drowned man was successfully rescued.

At today's presentation ceremony, the Assistant Director (Leisure Services), Mr Eddy Yau, presented letters of appreciation to the seven lifeguards and praised them for their exceptional alertness and their prompt and effective rescue operations.
