Entries invited for Good People Management Award

************************************************

The Labour Department is inviting all organisations in Hong Kong to compete for the Good People Management Award 2000 (GPMA) which aims to promote, encourage and commend employers in achieving good people management. The deadline for submitting entries is September 8.

The Award was launched by the department's Workplace Consultation Promotion Unit for the first time last year, with overwhelming response from 119 participating establishments.

This year, the assessment will consist of three parts. The first is a self-assessment by participating organisations themselves. They are required to complete the checklist in the application form indicating whether they have adopted employee-oriented management practices, are law abiding as well as equal and fair in five major aspects.

The five major aspects are recruitment; selection and offer of employment; staff training; safety and health at work; employer-employee communication and termination of employment.

Participants are encouraged to submit a brief description of their outstanding performance in people management and successful cases of their companies' practices in other relevant areas in people management. Potential award winners will be shortlisted at this stage.

The second part is preliminary screening. An assessment team will crosscheck and validate the information submitted by participants and clarify any questions concerning their submissions. Eligible participants will be shortlisted for the final selection.

In the last judging process, finalists will be invited to make a 20-minute presentation to the Panel of Judges on the establishment's outstanding achievements in good people management.

The panel of judges will include the Reader of the School of Business of the University of Hong Kong, Dr Ng Sek-hong; the Professor of Management Department of Marketing of the City University of Hong Kong, Dr Leung Kwok; Member of the Labour Advisory Board and the Legislative Council, the Hon Ho Sai-chu; Members of the Labour Advisory Board, Mr Leung Fu-wah, Mr Anthony Yeung Kwok-ki and Mr Poon Siu-ping; the President of the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management, Mr Mak Ping-on; and the Chairman of the Hong Kong Industrial Relations Association, Mr Garek Hui; Assistant Commissioner for Labour, Mrs Jennie Chor and Chief Labour Officer, Mrs Jenny Chan.

There will be a total of 15 awards for winning establishments. Five awards will be presented to those employing 100 or fewer people, while the other 10 will go to establishments with an employment size between 101 and 500 and those with 501 and above. An award presentation ceremony will be held on December 1 this year.

The winners will receive a permanent momento. They will also be entitled to display the GPMA logo for two years on the establishment's letterheads, envelopes and other promotional materials.

The department will produce a souvenir publication to outline the outstanding achievements of the winners in good people management. It will also invite the winners to share their successful experience with participants in seminars, workshops and other promotional activities organised by the department.
