In response to media enquiries about the views of the Chief Executive on the inauguration address by the new Taiwanese leader, a Government spokesman said:

"The Chief Executive has taken note of the inauguration address of the new Taiwanese leader. The Chief Executive points out that in Hong Kong our earnest hope is to see reunification of the country at an early date. The 'One China' principle receives wide support in Hong Kong. Hopefully, the new Taiwanese leader will signify clearly acceptance of the 'One China' principle, so that the objective of 'peaceful reunification' can be achieved at an early date."
