Re-appointments to Committee on Bilingual Legal System

The Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa has re-appointed three lay members and two representatives of the legal professional bodies to the Committee on Bilingual Legal System for another term of two years from April 1, 2000 to March 31, 2002.

The three lay members are Dr Daniel Tse, the President and Vice-Chancellor, Hong Kong Baptist University; Professor Nelson Chow, Professor, Department of Social Work and Social Administration, University of Hong Kong and Dr Ng Tat-lun, Managing Director, Eveready Battery Company, Inc. Mr Alan K. K. Leong, SC and Mr Vincent Liang are representatives of the Hong Kong Bar Association and the Law Society of Hong Kong respectively.

The Committee on Bilingual Legal System, chaired by the Secretary for Justice, Ms Elsie Leung, was established on April 1, 1998 to advise the government on measures to further develop Hong Kong's bilingual legal system in line with the Basic Law and common law traditions.

Members from the Government and the Judiciary are the Chief Judge of the High Court, the Hon Mr Justice Patrick Chan; the Director of Legal Aid, Mr S Y Chan; the Commissioner for Official Languages, Mr Lee Lap-sun and the Law Draftsman, Mr Tony Yen.

The Secretary for Education and Manpower or his representative ceased to be a member with effect from April 1, 2000.
