In response to press enquiries, the Judiciary has issued the following statement on behalf of the Hon Mr Justice Patrick Chan, the Chief Judge of the High Court, and the Hon Mr Justice Ribeiro, Justice of Appeal of the High Court :

"We are greatly honoured that the Chief Executive has, on the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission, appointed us as Permanent Judges of the Court of Final Appeal. We are mindful of the community's expectations of the Court of Final Appeal in upholding the rule of law and safeguarding our freedoms, and we are willing to do our best to fulfil the community's expectations of us in the new appointment.

According to the Basic Law and the Hong Kong Court of Final Appeal Ordinance, the Chief Executive shall obtain the endorsement of the Legislative Council on our appointments. At this stage, it would not be appropriate for us to make further comments."
