Five Senior Counsel Appointed

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary :

The Honourable Chief Justice Andrew Kwok-nang Li, is pleased to announce today (19 April 2000) the appointment of Mr Michael Robert Daniel Bunting, Mr Robert John Whitehead, Mr Charles Anthony Sussex, Mr Ambrose Ho and Ms Teresa Cheng Yeuk Wah as Senior Counsel of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The appointments are made by the Chief Justice under section 31A of the Legal Practitioners Ordinance.

Their appointments will take effect from the date of the Instrument of Appointment which will be executed on the day of the ceremonial proceedings to be held on May 13, 2000 at 9:30 am in Court No. 1 of the High Court.

The biographical notes of the five newly appointed Senior Counsel are as follows :

Mr Michael Robert Daniel Bunting

Mr Michael Robert Daniel Bunting, aged 52, was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1974. His practice is mainly in the commercial law area. Mr Bunting currently serves on the Court of Final Appeal Rules Committee, the High Court Rules Committee, the Barristers Disciplinary Tribunal and the Inland Revenue Board of Review.

Mr Robert John Whitehead

Mr Robert John Whitehead, aged 44, was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1977. His practice is mainly concerned with commercial law and public law. Mr Whitehead is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators since 1992, and is an approved tutor of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Mr Charles Anthony Sussex

Mr Charles Anthony Sussex, aged 48, was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 1983. Mr Sussex practised in Hong Kong, specialising in shipping and international trade litigation. Between 1989 and 1999, he practised at the English Bar but during this period, he continued to do a substantial amount of Hong Kong work. Since February 1999, he has been in full time practice in Hong Kong.

Mr Ambrose Ho

Mr Ambrose Ho, aged 39, was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1984. His practice is mainly concerned with civil law, mostly in the areas of conveyancing and personal injury. Mr Ho has been a member of the Bar Council since 1995 and is currently honorary secretary. He is a Chairman of the Appeal Tribunal (Building) and a member of the ICAC Complaints Committee.

Ms Teresa Cheng Yeuk Wah

Ms Teresa Cheng Yeuk Wah, aged 41, was called to the Hong Kong Bar in 1987. She specialises in construction and arbitration work. Ms Cheng has been the Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (East Asia Branch) from 1997 to 1999. She currently sits as a Council Member of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Center, the Inter-pacific Bar Association and the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators.
