DIP attends Symposium on Intellectual Property in Beijing

*********************************************************

The Director of Intellectual Property, Mr Stephen Selby, will attend and speak at a three-day symposium on intellectual property (IP) to be held between tomorrow (April 12) and April 14 in Beijing.

The opening ceremony will be officiated by the Commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), Md Jiang Ying; Mr Selby; the Deputy Secretary of the Economic Bureau of the Macau Special Administrative Region (SAR), Mr Tai Kin-yip.

The Mainland-Hong Kong SAR IP Symposium 2000 is being jointly organised by the SIPO and the SAR's Intellectual Property Department. Officials from the Macau SAR will also speak at this symposium.

A spokesman for the Intellectual Property Department said today (April 11): "This symposium is the first one ever held among official IP organisations in the Mainland and the two SARs since the transfer of sovereignty of both SARs and the recent renaming of the SIPO."

"The aims of the symposium are to update, compare and contrast, and to forecast development in the laws, policy, acquisition of rights and dispute settlement relating to IP in the Mainland and the HKSAR."

"Participants in the symposium will explore how IP systems in the Mainland and the HKSAR impact on different enterprises," the spokesman said.

"They will also explore how different enterprises could maximise the economic exploitation of their IP assets under the IP protection systems in the Mainland and the HKSAR," he added.

Mr Selby will give an update on Hong Kong's IP public education, while Deputy Director Mr Peter Cheung, and Assistant Directors, Mrs Teresa Grant; Mr Rayman Perera; and Mr Kestutis Stasys Kripas, will speak on various themes.

Two of the panelists from the legal profession are Judge Cheng Yongshun of the Beijing High People's Court and Mr Justice Anthony Rogers of the HKSAR's Court of Appeal.

Day One of the symposium will cover topics on patent and design protection; trade mark protection; updates on copyright protection and IP dispute settlement.

The second day of the symposium will focus on the impact of IP and unfair competition laws on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The impact on Chinese medicine as an example will also be looked into.

The commercialisation and valuation of IP, as well as an update on IP public education will be themes for panel discussion on the third and final day.

Local participants in the symposium include lawyers, SME proprietors and operators, academics and government officials.

A detailed programme of the symposium to be held at the China IP Training Centre is set out in the Annex.
