Acting Chief Executive's transcript

*************************************

Following is the transcript of the media session by the Acting Chief Executive, Mrs Anson Chan, after the opening ceremony of a roving exhibition to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law this (April 10) morning (English part):

Reporter: What do you think of the criticism on Mr Tung in the US when he said the comment about Taiwan and Hong Kong...?

Mrs Chan: I think first of all, there is a somewhat exaggerated distortion of what Mr Tung actually said and I advise you all to read the full transcript of the statement in the States. I hope that the local press, some of the local press, would not attempt to distort what he actually said. In fact, what Mr Tung said was to reiterate that insofar as Hong Kong people are concerned, there is general support for one China and for peaceful reunification.

Reporter: Does he (Mr Muttaleb) give you any idea as to how he feels on this issue...?

Mrs Chan: I think the important thing is to stress to Mr Muttaleb that, first of all, the government is fully behind the sports' fraternity and desire to host the Asian Games. We are confident that we'll put in a very competitive bid. We are working in very close partnership with Mr Timothy Fok and the Hong Kong Olympic Association, and the business sector is also very heavily involved in putting together our bid. The important thing is to make sure that our bid document is comprehensive and that we address all the concerns of the OAC.
