LRC plays important role

************************

As Hong Kong meets the challenges of the new millennium and those brought by the advent of the knowledge economy and new technologies, the Law Reform Commission (LRC) will continue to play an important role in law reform to ensure that our legal system is kept in tune with society's changing needs.

The Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, said this at a reception held at Government House today (March 22) to mark the 20th anniversary of the LRC of Hong Kong.

Mr Tung stressed that the Government was firmly committed to the rule of law, which was one of the cornerstones of Hong Kong's success.

"The successful implementation of the 'One Country, Two Systems' concept and the rule of law in the HKSAR is here for all of us to see. The Government pays great attention to ensuring that every decision we make and every policy we implement is consistent with the rule of law.

"Yet, an important element for the continued well-being of the rule of law is that our body of laws must be able to keep up with social and economic development and the changing aspirations of our people. The LRC has a vital role to play in that process," he said.

The Chief Executive thanked LRC members for having volunteered their valuable time, expertise and experience to play a part in this important task.
