Judicial Appointments

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary :

The Judiciary today (Friday) announced the appointment of Justices of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of the High Court, the Hon Mr Justice Gerald Michael GODFREY and the Hon Mr Justice Simon Herbert MAYO as Vice-Presidents of the Court of Appeal of the High Court, with immediate effect.

Mr Justice GODFREY and Mr Justice MAYO take the places vacated by retired Judges John Barry MORTIMER and Gerald Paul NAZARETH.

The biographical notes of the newly-appointed Judges are as follows :

The Hon Mr Justice Gerald Michael GODFREY, JA

Mr Justice GODFREY was born in the United Kingdom in 1933. He was called to the English Bar in 1954 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1971. He had been in private practice in England between 1954 and 1986. He was appointed Judge of the High Court in Hong Kong in 1986 and Justice of Appeal in 1993.

The Hon Mr Justice Simon Herbert MAYO, JA

Mr Justice MAYO was born in the United Kingdom in 1937. He was admitted as a solicitor in England in 1961 and as a solicitor in Hong Kong in 1963. In 1967, he was admitted as a solicitor and barrister in West Australia. Before joining the Hong Kong Judiciary as Assistant Registrar in 1968, Mr Justice MAYO was in private practice. He was appointed Registrar of Supreme Court in 1976. He was appointed Judge of the High Court in 1980 and Justice of Appeal in 1995.
