The Secretary for Housing, Mr Dominic S. W. Wong, announced today (Monday) that the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, has re-appointed all 20 existing members of the Estate Agents Authority (EAA) for a term of one year with effect from November 1, 1999.

The EAA was established on November 1,1997 under the Estate Agents Ordinance (Cap 511), with the aims of improving the standard of service provided by estate agents and protecting consumers involved in property transactions.

Mr Wong said that the EAA has laid a good foundation for regulating and educating the estate agency trade in Hong Kong.

"In the past two years, it has devised a licensing system for estate agents; set examination standards and held two qualifying examinations for estate agents; provided training for the trade; taken disciplinary action against some estate agents for malpractices; and worked out a system to regulate trade practices with effect from 1 November.

"I am most grateful to members of the EAA for their dedicated work and valuable contribution."

"The membership of the EAA has a good balance of different interests," Mr Wong added.
