Transcript of media session by Chief Secretary for Administration

******************************************************************

Following is the English portion of the transcript of the media session by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Anson Chan, after officiating at the Opening Ceremony of the Shuen Wan and Urban Landfills Restoration this (Monday) morning:

Reporter: Mrs Chan, in your speech, you spoke of past faults and omissions. Is this an acknowledgement that the government has maybe done things wrong in the past on environmental protection?

Mrs Chan: It's not so much a question of doing things wrong. I think protecting the environment, as we stressed all along, must be a partnership between the government, the people at all levels and commerce and industry. What we need to do, on the one hand, is to make the public more conscious of the need to protect our environment. The government will, of course, do all it can on its part and we've already indicated that, although the economy is still not doing well and our financial state is not, as it were, as good as before. Nevertheless, we still intend to spend over the next three years a colossal sum of money to improve the environment. On this front, there are new technology, there are new ideas and what we must do is to be alert to these new technologies and to make sure that we take every advantage of this, and we need to do this in partnership with the people and with the commerce and industry.
