The Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, visited a vocational training institute and a family living in a public housing estate in Eastern District tonight (Wednesday).
At the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Training (Chai Wan), Mr Tung observed students attending an evening course on computer engineering.
Speaking to the students, Mr Tung emphasised the importance of life-long learning. He was pleased that the students had shown such enthusiasm in improving themselves after a day of hard work in the day time.
He said, "The Government recognises that human capital is the most important element in improving our future. We will give education top priority in order to take Hong Kong forward in an increasingly competitive world."
Noting that the institute provided courses which were attuned to the needs of the economy, Mr Tung added that vocational education and training was a viable alternative to academic education.
Mr Tung then visited a five-member family living in Hing Tung Estate in Shau Kei Wan. The mother and her two daughters just arrived recently to join her husband and a younger brother in Hong Kong.
Mr Tung brought some presents which the family could enjoy during the coming Mid-Autumn Festival.
The Chief Executive commuted by MTR during his tour from Shau Kei Wan to Admiralty.
