Sex education course for secondary school teachers

Schools heads are invited to nominate teachers of their schools to attend a three-day course on sex education for secondary schools teachers next month (July).

Organised by the Biological Sciences Section, Advisory Inspectorate Division of the Education Department, the course aims at enhancing teachers' knowledge on human sexuality and equipping teachers with skills for helping pupils with sex-related problems.

The course will also help to build up teachers' confidence and ability in conducting sex education programme in schools.

Speakers of the course include experts from the Education Department, the Department of Health, Against Child Abuse, the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society as well as medical practitioners.

A series of talks will be given by guest speakers on the following topics:

* psychological aspects on adolescent sexuality development;

* prevention of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases;

* sex-related problems of adolescents;

* contraceptive methods and abortion;

* helping pupils with sex-related problems; and

* sexual harassment, sexual abuse and sexual violence.

There will also be workshops for participants to discuss on selected sex education topics, including puberty and responsible sexual attitudes and values.

The course will be held on three consecutive days between July 12 and 14 at the Hong Kong Teachers' Centre at Pak Fuk Road, North Point.

An attendance certificate issued by the Education Department will be awarded to teachers who have completed over 80 per cent of the course.
