Chief Secretary for Administration's statement on opening of second runway

**************************************************************************

In attending the opening of the second runway at the Hong Kong International Airport today (Wednesday), the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Anson Chan, made the following statement :

" I was proud to be able to witness the opening of the second runway today, which marks an important milestone of the Hong Kong International Airport. This is the first time in the history of Hong Kong that we have two runways operating simultaneously at our airport.

The second runway will immediately relieve peak hour congestion and will greatly reduce the waiting time of aircraft. With the second runway becoming fully operational in August, this will offer additional landing and take-off slots which will enable airlines to achieve maximum operational efficiency and will enhance passenger convenience.

I am sure the additional capacity of the second runway will facilitate the further development of the extensive air services network serving Hong Kong and will strengthen Hong Kong's position as an international and regional aviation hub.

On this important and meaningful day, I would like to convey my thanks to the Airport Authority Board of Directors for their dedication and contribution to the whole airport project. In particular, I would like to salute to all the outgoing Members of the Board, with special thanks to the Chairman, Mr Wong Po-yan, for his personal devotion to this project through all these years.

On behalf of the Administration, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to the new Members of the Board, with whom the Administration looks forward to working together to bring the successful operation of the airport to new heights."
