Environment high on Chief Executive's agenda

******************************************

The Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, tonight (Tuesday) toured a part of Causeway Bay where some very high air pollution indices had been recorded in the past year.

Mr Tung took an LPG taxi from his office to Jardine's Crescent at 7 pm and ended his hour-long tour by taking a bus on his return trip.

Noting that the large number of diesel vehicles on our roads is a major cause of air pollution in our city, Mr Tung said that the Government would continue to take steps to protect the environment so that Hong Kong people could enjoy a better and healthier quality of life.

"An improved living environment will help enhance our reputation as a pleasant destination for tourists and for international business travellers, and will make Hong Kong a more attractive place for highly-skilled professionals to live in," he said.

At Jardine's Crescent, the Chief Executive had a chat with customers in several shops and eateries as well as drivers of public light buses waiting for passengers. Apart from asking them about their views on environment, Mr Tung also took the opportunity to learn more about how the retail and catering businesses had been doing recently.
