Three Senior Counsel Appointed

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary :

The Honourable Chief Justice Andrew Kwok-nang Li, is pleased to announce today (Friday) the appointment of Mr Andrew Colin Macrae, Mr Joseph Paul Fok and Mr John Richard Reading as Senior Counsel of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The appointments are made by the Chief Justice under section 31A of the Legal Practice Ordinance.

Their appointments will take effect from the date of the Instrument of Appointment which will be executed on the day of the ceremonial proceedings to be held on April 24, 1999 at 9.30 am in Court No. 1 of the High Court.

The biographical notes of the three newly appointed Senior Counsel are as follows :

Mr Andrew Colin Macrae

Mr Andrew Colin Macrae, aged 43, was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1983. His practice is mainly in the criminal law area. He is now a member of the Bar Council and previously served on the Council from 1991-1993. Mr Macrae participates in the Bar Council Advanced Legal Education Workshops for young Barristers and Pupils and is also involved in giving talks and demonstrations on Advocacy at the University of Hong Kong.

Mr Joseph Paul Fok

Mr Joseph Paul Fok, aged 36, was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1986. His practice is mainly concerned with commercial law and includes defamation, revenue and public and administrative law. Mr Fok is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and sits as a member of the Law Reform Commission Sub-Committee on Contracts for the Supply of Goods.

Mr John Richard Reading

Mr John Richard Reading, aged 49, was first called to the New South Wales (Australia) Bar in 1978 and worked as a solicitor/advocate in the New South Wales Public Prosecutions Office between July 1981 and July 1984. Thereafter he came to Hong Kong and joined the then Legal Department, specializing in criminal appeals and prosecutions. Mr Reading is now the Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions in the Department of Justice. He is a part-time lecturer in the Department of Law at the City University of Hong Kong.
