Viagra - prescription only medicine

In response to press enquiries, a spokesman for the Department of Health confirmed today (Friday) that an application for the registration of a drug "sildenafil", trade name "Viagra", had been approved in Hong Kong.

He pointed out that under the Pharmacy and Poisons Amendment Regulation, ingredients of this drug, used for treatment of male erectile dysfunction, is listed under the Third Schedule of the Pharmacy and Poisons Regulations, making it a "Prescription Only Medicine".

"This means that the drug can only be supplied by doctors or sold in dispensaries with doctor's prescription only."

He added that offenders will be liable to a maximum fine of $100,000 and two years' imprisonment upon conviction.

On the health aspect, the spokesman noted that there were reports overseas that associated the death of some people taking some heart medicines with the use of this drug.

"It is therefore important that people should not take drug without consulting doctors."
