The following is the full text of the speech by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, at the Reception for the Hong Kong, China Delegation Participating in the 7th FESPIC for the Disabled and the Presentation of Awards of the Athlete Incentive Scheme today (Tuesday):
Ladies and gentlemen,
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Hong Kong, China Delegation for their creditable performance at the 7th FESPIC for the Disabled. Your achievements have made us very proud and excited.
Here in Hong Kong, we have been following closely the news of the Delegation's achievements in Thailand since they set out for the Game. In the events in which they took part, the team fully displayed our "Hong Kong Spirit". With calm and concentration, they demonstrated a high standard of performance in the keen competitions, bringing pride and honour to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. I am much delighted to learn of the great success of our athletes in the international sporting event. I am sure that every member of our community feels very proud of your outstanding achievements. I would like to express once again my heartfelt congratulations to every member of the Delegation.
Disabled people might be subject to much inconvenience in their daily life. Our athletes have not only overcome these barriers, but also take challenges in a positive manner and move boldly ahead towards their goals. They spare no efforts to give full play to their sporting talents in the competitions and earned the recognition and acclaim of the community.
Every medal won by the Delegation represents the combined efforts of every member, the Hong Kong Sports Association for the Physically Disabled, the Hong Kong Sports Association for the Mentally Handicapped, the Hong Kong Sports Development Board, the Amateur Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, and related national sports associations. I hope that all of you will continue to display our "Hong Kong Spirit" and work together for greater success in future competitions.
Sports can strengthen our physique, cultivate a spirit of tenacity and achieve unity in the community. I hope that the Delegation's success in the FESPIC for the Disabled will encourage and motivate more people, able-bodied and disabled alike, to take greater part in sports activities.
On behalf of the SAR Government, I thank you all once again for your tremendous efforts in Bangkok and say once again that I feel really proud of your achievements.
Thank you.
