Appointments to the UGC and RGC

Following the earlier appointment of Dr Alice Piera Lam Lee Kiu-yue as the new Chairman of the University Grants Committee (UGC) for a term of three years with effect from February 1, 1999, the Government announced today (Monday) the appointment of members to the UGC.

The Chief Executive has re-appointed the following 16 serving members to the UGC for a further term of between one and three years with effect from April 1, 1999:

Mr Joseph W P Wong, the Secretary for Education and Manpower, said, "We welcome the appointment of six new members to the UGC. They will help foster stronger links between the tertiary sector and the business sector, as well as between the tertiary and basic education sectors,"

The Government also announced the appointment of Prof Kenneth Young, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, as the Chairman of the Research Grants Council (RGC) for a term of three years with effect from July 1, 1999. Professor Young is a serving UGC member and a former member of the RGC between 1993 and 1996.

"Under Prof Kenneth Young's leadership, the RGC will continue to support university researches in order to maintain the academic vigour in our universities and to serve the needs of Hong Kong," Mr Joseph Wong said.

Mr Wong thanked the outgoing UGC members, Mr Jacland Lai, Mr Henry Fan and Professor Brian Smith for their past contributions. He also thanked the outgoing RGC Chairman, Prof Ping K Ko, for the invaluable service which he rendered the RGC. "The accomplishments of the UGC and the RGC in the past years owe much to their valuable contributions." Mr Wong said.
