Chief Executive visits elderly

******************************

The Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, tonight (Thursday) visited two units in Wong Chuk Hang Estate, bringing with him quilted vests, woollen socks and some food for two elderly women living alone in the units.

He reminded residents, in particular the elderly, to prepare themselves well in the face of the cold spell so that they would remain fit and strong.

Mr Tung said, "Those who have elderly people or sick persons in their family should take special care of them. Those who have elerly relatives or neighbours who are living alone should try to check on them regularly to see whether they require special assistance in the cold weather."

"This is the time when we should express our concern for the elderly and the needy and manifest the spirit of helping each other," he added.

The Chief Executive noted that the Home Affairs Department (HAD), the Social Welfare Department (SWD), and the Hong Kong Observatory were working together closely to provide services for the people during the current cold spell. The temporary cold shelters operated by the HAD remain open round-the-clock while the SWD runs a 24-hour hotline service to serve the needy during the cold weather.

"In addition to meeting the physical needs of the elderly, care and concern from people close to them is something that will truly warm their hearts," Mr Tung added.
