Tsing Yi South Bridge structurally safe

In response to media enquiries, a Highways Department spokesman today (Thursday) said a comprehensive structural inspection by a consultant to Tsing Yi South Bridge revealed that the bridge structure was in satisfactory condition and there was no question of collapse or structural inadequacy.

"The inspection which was commissioned in mid-1997 and is just completed has been extremely comprehensive. In addition to the basic inspection tests, loading test, vibration measurement and gamma ray inspection are also included," the spokesman said.

"The inspection also reveals that the load carrying capacity is adequate to carry all the traffic, utilities and other loadings on it.

"Maintenance works is expected to commence in mid-1999 after the Duplicate Tsing Yi South Bridge is fully open to traffic to facilitate replacement of hinge bearing in between the cantilever arms of the bridge.

"Opportunity will also be taken to do maintenance works for the expansion joints, road surfacing and other routine maintenance works."

"Alternative traffic routes over the Duplicate Tsing Yi South Bridge will be provided for the public during the period of bridge closure.

"An inter-departmental working group has been set up and is working on the best traffic arrangement."
