The Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, called on Premier Zhu Rongji this (Friday) afternoon at the Great Hall of the People to report duty. This morning, he had a meeting with Vice Premier Qian Qichen at Zhongnanhai.
Mr Tung briefed CPG leaders on major developments in Hong Kong since his last duty trip in December 1997, ranging from political, economic, social and livelihood issues.
On the economy, the Chief Executive briefed CPG leaders on the various economic challenges facing Hong Kong and the series of short, medium and long term measures introduced by the Government which aiming to relieve the people's burden in the short term. These measures also seek to lay a good foundation for the recovery and development of our economy.
Mr Tung noted the joint efforts being taken by all sectors of the community to meet our economic challenges. He said he remained positive about our economy in the long run.
CPG leaders expressed support to the SAR Government and were affirmative towards its policy initiatives.
Mr Tung took a break from his official activities around mid-day and visited Peking University. He was pleased to have an opportunity to exchange views with the faculty and students of the University on issues ranging from high technology development to aspirations of the younger generation.
To conclude his duty visit, Mr Tung will call on President Jiang Zemin tomorrow morning. He will then proceed on leave until October 27. Mr and Mrs Tung will spend their vacation in the Mainland.
