The third edition of the "English-Chinese Glossary of Legal Terms" carrying more than 30,000 entries was published by the Department of Justice today (Monday).

Introducing the latest edition of the glossary at a press conference today, the Law Draftsman, Mr Tony Yen, said the publication is the most comprehensive glossary of its kind published in Hong Kong to date. It intends to further promote the wider use of Chinese legal vocabulary by the legal profession and the public.

"The glossary contains 15,000 more legal terms than the previous edition, many from the last batches of authentic Chinese texts of existing legislation completed shortly before the Handover," he said.

The glossary also incorporated a bilingual glossary of legal terms in electoral legislation compiled by the Law Drafting Division earlier.

As the volume of the entries in this edition has increased substantially, the glossary is now presented in three volumes. In volumes I and II, users will find alphabetically indexed terms in English and in the appendices, a list of English-Chinese Short Titles and Citations of the Laws of Hong Kong.

"We hope frequent users of the glossary including those from legal profession, academics, translators, journalists and anyone who is interested in the bilingual legal system will continue to make full use of the Glossary as a handy and useful reference tools in their daily work," Mr Yen said.

The glossary will be on sale at $168 from tomorrow (Tuesday) at the Government Publication Centre, Queensway Government Offices, Low Block, ground floor, 66 Queensway.

"With the publication of the glossary, we will start preparing for the first edition of the Chinese-English Glossary of Legal Terms which is expected to be available some time next year," he added.
