Wu Mei Yee presents Cantonese operatic songs concert

The following is issued on behalf of the Provisional Regional Council:

Prominent artiste Wu Mei Yee, also known as "Queen of the New Era's Cantonese Operatic songs", will present her expertise at the Provisional Regional Council (Pro RC) venues in the New Territories in mid-October.

Organized by the Pro RC, the concerts will be held at 8 pm at the Auditoriums of Sha Tin Town Hall (STTH) on October 9 (Friday), Tai Po Civic Centre (TPCC)on October 11 (Sunday), Tsuen Wan Town Hall (TWTH) on October 16 (Friday) and Tuen Mun Town Hall (TMTH) on October 17 (Saturday).

Guest singer Kam Kwok-wai will appear in concerts on October 9, 16 and 17 whereas another guest, Lung Koon-tin, will sing on October 11.

Programme includes "Sweet Scent of the Lotus", "The Tears of the Red Candles", "Romance at Hundred flowers Pavilion", "Deep Regrets", "Blessings", "The Autumn Moon upon the Placid West Lake", "Red Beans Love", "'Swallow in the Snow' from 'Princess Chang Ping'", "The Departure of Zhaojun (excerpt)", "God's Love for Mankind", "'Song of a Strange Land' from 'The Unfinished Romance in the Pheonix Chamber'", "Lovers Separated from Each Other", etc.

Wu has a penchant for Chinese operatic music. Her record "The Happy Reunion" launched in 1987 was especially popular with the Chinese operatic circle. Since 1996, Wu has made recording for eight albums of "Highlights of Chinese Operatic Music", leading up to seven platinum gold albums.

Her talent is not restricted to operatic songs alone. She was awarded the champion in the 1977 "Sing Po Cinema Workshop" final contest organized by Television Broadcast Limited and began her artiste career thereafter.

Wu made her debut in 1992 in the theatrical production "The Moonlight Opera", which won her the award of "Best Actress" in the Second Hong Kong Drama Award held by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies.

Tickets are priced at $50, $70, $90, $110 for STTH, TWTH, TMTH and at $50, $70, $90 for TPCC. Half-price tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 or above and people with disabilities holding concessionary card on a first-come-first-served basis. Friends of Pro RC Town Hall can enjoy a 15 per cent discount.
