Following is a statement issued by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, today (Thursday) on the tragic event at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital:

"I was shocked and distressed to learn of the tragic event at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital today. I have been fully briefed by senior officials. I know that all the action that needs to be taken is being carried out as a matter of priority and urgency.

We are determined to ensure that the matter will be fully investigated in order to prevent a recurrence. The Police have launched their enquiries and the Coroner has been notified. The hospital has appointed an independent investigation panel which is to report to the Director of Health within two weeks.

We know that we need to restore public confidence in our health services. We will do everything that is required to do so.

Our hearts go out to the families who have lost their loved ones and our thoughts are with the relatives and friends of those who are still being treated as a result of this tragic incident. I join in the community in wishing them the speediest possible recovery."
