The following is issued on behalf of the Provisional Regional Council:
Some 80 000 residents today (Wednesday) were treated to action-and-fun-packed programmes organised by the Provisional Regional Council (Pro RC).
The Sports and Games Carnival as well as the opening of 67 Pro RC leisure facilities in the New Territories were organised to celebrate the anniversary of Hong Kong's historic reunion with China.
The two programmes, which are free for all and focus on demonstrations of and participation in various sports and other recreational activities, were to promote the "Sport for All" message among local residents of all ages.
The carnival was officiated by Pro RC Chairman, Mr Lau Wong-fat, and Acting Director of Regional Services, Mr Fred Ting.
A telegame between members of Pro RC and local district sports organisations, a mass tai-chi, Chinese flag dance and percussion music performances were staged after the opening ceremony in Sha Tin Sports Ground.
Other highlights of the carnival included demonstrations of diving, figure-swimming and table-tennis by members of the Guangdong Sports Technical Institute, as well as children games in three other Pro RC venues in Sha Tin.
The leisure facilities which were opened to the public comprise swimming pools, tennis and squash courts, as well as indoor recreation centres.
