The following is issued on behalf of the Provisional Regional Council:
Thirty-one famous sportsmen from Guangdong will perform for local residents in the anniversary of Hong Kong's reunion with China on July 1 (Wednesday).
They are members of the Guangdong Sports Technical Institute who will give demonstrations and participate in friendly matches in figure-swimming, table-tennis and diving events in a sports and games carnival organised by the Provisional Regional Council in Sha Tin.
Appearing in the Sha Tin Jockey Club Public Swimming Pool are winners of the 5th Asia Swimming Championships (Diving), Mr. Fan Hua-qiang and Ms Li Rong-juan, as well as of China's National Diving Championships, Mr. Wei Jian-hui, Mr. Tao Tang and Ms Wu Shun-qun.
The first runner-up of China's National Figure-swimming Winner Games, Ms Fang Jing, and winning teams of two national figure-swimming competitions will also perform their winning pieces.
In Yuen Wo Road Indoor Recreation Centre, table-tennis demonstrations will be given by winners of China's National Peasant Games, Peasant Games and Sheng Gang Cup. They will also play friendly matches with representatives from the Hong Kong Table Tennis Association.
Other attractions at the two venues include basketball demonstration matches by Regal, water polo competitions by Hong Kong Canoe Union, as well as social and Latin dances by members of Hong Kong Dance Federation.
The opening of the carnival will take place at Sha Tin Sports Ground where a parade, Chinese drums and folk dances, a mass Tai-chi and stunt-cycling performances will be staged.
Admission to the carnival is free and tickets are now being distributed at the nine District Offices of the Regional Services Department on a first-come-first-served basis. For enquiries, please call 2609 4579.
