Record hits to government web site for election information

***********************************************************

Visits to the government home page reached record high yesterday (Monday) when results of the first Legislative Council Election of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region were being announced .

A record of 38,964 visits were made to the Election Results of the Government Information Centre (GIC) at http://www.info.gov.hk, an unprecedented visitor figure to a single page since the web site was established in late 1995.

A total of 18,827 Internet users visited the index page of GIC, which is close to four times the daily hit of 5,210 last month, a spokesman for the Information Services Department said.

The spokesman said a special page providing comprehensive information about the Election had been produced in the Government web site since February this year.

The dedicated page provides a wide range of frequently updated information on the Legislative Council Election.

On May 24 and 25, the hourly voter turnout and election results were uploaded to the appropriate pages of the election section in minutes following their dissemination to the media.

Information of the election pages was systematically arranged and links were built to provide easy access to information of candidates and their platforms, major press releases and speeches, Geographical and Functional Constituencies and Election Committee as well as photographs taken in various events of the election.

All the information on the Election will be kept in the web site as part of the archives.

End/Tuesday, May 26, 1998.
