The following is the remarks made by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, after he cast his vote in St Joseph's College polling station this morning (Sunday):

Mr Tung: This is a very important and historic day for Hong Kong. Through this election process we will be electing representatives for the 60 member strong legislature. The legislature has a very important function, as you all know. It will be enacting laws, carefully examining all public expenditure, and also monitoring the work of the Government as a whole.

Today, we see a very important step in the realisation of the Basic Law and the concept of one country, two systems. I, myself, and my colleagues in the Government will all be voting. And I would like to appeal to everybody in Hong Kong to come and vote. And despite the somewhat bad weather, for everybody to come and vote, to exercise your right to vote. And when you vote, please make sure when you tick, you tick inside the circle - to make sure that the vote is valid. Thank you all very much.
