Tolo Harbour water quality to improve

The water quality of Tolo Harbour and the sanitary condition of the unsewered areas in Sha Tin and Tai Po will be significantly improved upon completion of sewerage works in mid-2000.

A spokesman for the Drainage Services Department said today (Tuesday) that gravity and pumping sewers, seven pumping stations and a dry weather flow interceptor would be built in 12 unsewered areas in Sha Tin and four unsewered areas in Tai Po.

The unsewered areas in Sha Tin include Tai Lam Liu, Shek Kwu Lung, Wong Nai Tau, Wu Kai Sha, Tai Shui Hang, Wo Liu Hang, Pai Tau, Tung Lo Wan, Pat Tsz Wo, Ha Wo Che, Fo Tan and Fo Tan Cottage Area, while the four in Tai Po are To Yuen Tung, Tai Po Kau, Sam Mun Tsai and Pao Siu Loong Care and Attention Building.

The contract, at a cost of about $60 million, was signed by the Assistant Director/Projects and Development, Mr Lai Fuk-kan, and a representative from the contractor, Leader Civil Engineering Corporation Ltd.

"The contract, which forms part of the Tolo Harbour Sewerage of Unsewered Areas Scheme, will start this Thursday," the spokesman said.

"Upon completion of the scheme, all sewage from unsewered developments at 165 locations within the Tolo Harbour catchment will be collected and treated before disposal," he said.

"So far, four contracts covering unsewered developments at 46 locations within the area have been awarded," he added.
