166 candidates validly nominated for LegCo election

A total of 166 candidates have been validly nominated for the Legislative Council election on May 24, the gazette announced today (Friday).

Candidates from 10 uncontested functional constituencies are declared to be duly elected as members of the Legislative Council. Their term of office will begin on July 1, 1998.

They are Mr Lau Wong-fat (Heung Yee Kuk), Mr Edward Ho Sing-tin (Architectural, Surveying and Planning), Mr Law Chi-kwong (Social Welfare), Mr Howard Young (Tourism), Mr James Tien Pei-chun (Commercial (First)), Dr Philip Wong Yu-hong (Commercial(Second)), Mr Kenneth Ting Woo-shou (Industrial(First)), Dr David Li Kwok-po (Finance), Mr Hui Cheung-ching (Import and Export) and Ms Sophie Lau Yau-fun (Textiles and Garment).

The other 156 candidates will contest 50 seats. In the geographical constituency election, 81 candidates from 34 lists will vie for 20 seats. 50 candidates will run for 20 seats in 18 functional constituencies. The 800-member Election Committee will elect 10 Legislative Councillors from among 25 candidates.

The number allocated to each candidate or list of candidates as shown on ballot papers are published in the gazette notice together with the candidates' principal residential address.
