Practical Tips on the Carers of Elders with Moderate to Severe Dementia
- Dementia Care II
As the disease progresses, elders with moderate to severe dementia face various difficulties, such as decline in daily functioning, cognitive impairment and behavioural problems. Most of them inevitably need to rely on carers for continuous support and personal care. If carers do not take proper care of themselves to handle the psychological stress and negative emotion, they may feel frustrated and be prone to burnout, which would adversely affect the care and quality of life of both themselves and the elder with dementia.
This film comprises a drama. The script is drawn up with the knowledge and experiences of health professionals in the Elderly Health Service of the Department of Health and carers of elders suffering from dementia. Some of these carers also appear in the film in person to share their experience and tips on caring for the demented and dealing with the distressing situations, so as to encourage other carers to face such situations in the positive way, and to seek help from professionals whenever necessary. Through this film, it is hoped that the general public, especially family members of carers, can know more about dementia, and show concern and support to the carers, so as to reduce their stress in caring for the demented and improve the quality of care to the elders.

"Exercise
for Healthy Ageing"
The
benefits of regular exercise are well known,
and many of the elders are already engaged
in regular exercise. However, is the exercise
suitable to you? Are they appropriate for
duration, frequency and intensity? How about
exercise safety?
To
echo the Healthy Ageing Campaign, the Elderly
Health Services of the Department of Health
has produced a video of "Exercise for Healthy
Ageing". This video consists of two parts.
Part I is a lively drama with a view to
disseminate the message of the benefits
and principles of exercise through the experience
of Mr Chan in developing a habit of regular
exercise. Part II is an exercise programme
of "Nine Steps to Health", which contains
nine structured movements and is specially
designed for the elders by the Physiotherapist.
This exercise programme aims to train the
balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination
of the elders.
